Our Curriculum

Academics

From Creche to Primary 6

An effective curriculum that helps each child fully harness their natural learning path for early success — delivered in three stages, with deliberately small classes so no child is a bystander.

Early Years

Creche and Reception. Playful learning across indoor and outdoor resources, assessed through the EYFS profile.

Junior Primary

Transition, Year Two and Year Three. Structured small-group and whole-class learning, with growing responsibility.

Upper Primary

Year Four and Year Five. Philosophical discussion, presentation confidence and real independence.

Stage 1

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Creche at Beryl Brooks

The Early Years Foundation Stage is the statutory framework that sets out children’s learning and development in the Foundation Stage. EYFS begins at birth and ends at the end of Reception year when a child is five. It provides children with the skills and knowledge necessary to build the foundation of learning for future process and success through school and life.

The EYFS profile summarises a child’s attainment at the end of the Foundation Stage; the judgement is based on ongoing observation and assessment of the characteristics of effective learning, as well as the prime and the specific areas of learning.

From Playgroup to Reception the children spend the majority of their day engaged in playful learning. This involves the children independently accessing a variety of indoor and outdoor resources focusing on the curriculum areas. They also take part in small-group times each day, working alongside their classmates and teachers. The Reception classroom provides a balance of adult-led and child-initiated learning opportunities so that children can progress socially, physically and academically.

Stage 2

Junior Primary in Beryl Brooks

Transition at Beryl Brooks

We support the children in this class through the transition from the Reception stage to Key Stage 1. We gradually increase the children’s exposure to more structured small groups and whole-class learning, with longer learning times.

Year Two in Beryl Brooks at Beryl Brooks

Year 2 is the end of Key Stage 1 and we have to ensure that pupils are well prepared to make the move to Key Stage 2 at the end of the year. While playful learning time is reduced, the children still engage in lots of hands-on practical activities using a range of resources to develop different concepts.

Year Three in Beryl Brooks at Beryl Brooks

Year 3 is the first year in Key Stage 2 and we work hard to support the transition from ‘infants to juniors’. We start to expect children to take a bit more responsibility for learning and homework, and we begin to see more extended working and investigation work. We aim to develop children’s social, emotional and academic skills, and we challenge children to strive for their personal best.

Stage 3

Upper Primary in Beryl Brooks

Year Four in Beryl Brooks at Beryl Brooks

From Year 4 we continue to develop and build on children’s social, emotional and academic skills through our creative curriculum. We embed opportunities for philosophical discussion and dialogue, we support the children as they build confidence in their presentation skills, and we encourage the children to become more independent, make sensible choices and strive for their personal best in all that they do.
